Senior Fitness Programs Offered Free by Local Council
Akron City Council funds no-cost group exercise sessions for residents 60 and older at parks and community centers this summer.
How we reported this

The City of Akron began enrolling participants July 1 for free senior fitness classes run by the Department of Parks and Recreation at multiple city sites.
Older adults in Summit County face higher rates of inactivity than the national average, with local health data showing one in three residents over 65 reporting no regular physical activity last year. Council members approved the expanded budget in May after reviewing participation logs from prior seasons that showed demand outstripping available slots by more than 200 people.
Locations and Schedules
Classes meet three mornings a week at the Highland Square Recreation Center on West Market Street and twice weekly at the Goodyear Heights Metro Park pavilion on Newton Street. Instructors lead seated strength work, balance drills and short walks along the adjacent paths, with sessions capped at 15 people to allow individual form checks.
Equipment such as resistance bands and stability balls stays on site, eliminating any need for participants to bring gear. The program runs through September 12 with make-up dates scheduled for weather cancellations at the same venues.
Numbers Behind the Effort
City records list 312 spots across the eight weekly classes, and registration closed after 48 hours once those openings filled. A 2025 Akron Health District survey reported that seniors who attended at least one prior session increased their weekly activity by an average of 90 minutes.
Residents can sign up by calling the Parks and Recreation office at 330-375-2855 or stopping by the main desk at 220 S Main Street before the next round opens in October.
